Free/Reduced Meals

August 01, 2024

Dear Parents/ Guardians:

Throughout the United States, Federal and State government programs, private and philanthropic groups provide grant opportunities to schools. Many of these grants take into account the number of students qualified for the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Food and Nutrition Service (USDA/FNS) National School Lunch Program (NSLP) for free or reduced price lunch. We are asking all parents/guardians, regardless of income, to complete the application; doing so may help secure additional money for our schools.

Please complete the Application (available in each school and DO) and return it to the Food Service Office, PO Box 304 Challis, Idaho 83226. Applicants will be informed within ten (10) operating days regarding their eligibility. If you are eligible you are not obligated to participate in the program. An application and the information it contains is completely confidential. You can complete one application for all school age children in your household. If you already receive financial assistance through the Federal Food Stamp program or though the TAFI your eligibility for NSLP will be certified automatically and it is not necessary for you to complete an application.

Any student who was a participant in the NSLP at the end of the last school year will automatically continue in the program through October 17, 2024.  A new application must be received by this date to continue in the program (except as noted above), otherwise the student will be moved to "full pay" for lunch beginning October 21, 2024 (CES $3.40 and CHS $3.60).

Breakfast is "full pay" CES $2.40 and CHS $2.60.

Please note: except for milk served as an item on a complete reimbursable lunch it is considered an "Ala cart" item and the student will be charged $.60 for the milk.

In accordance with USDA/FNS policy regulation (7CFR 15b), and Memorandum SP 59-2016 (Modifications to Accommodate Disabilities in the School Meal Program), student meals may be provided to accommodate a student's disability, e.g., physical, mental, allergies, etc. A written request must be submitted to the Food Service Director by the parent/guardian which identifies the specific condition to be addressed, and a written medical statement from a State licensed healthcare professional in support of a request may be required.

Thank you for your time and consideration, this little bit of effort could provide to be a very valuable contribution to your school's success. If you have any questions, please feel free contact me.

Thank you,

Christina Hoyt
